Scott Medlock, a native of Southern California is one of America's foremost artists in the sports world, his paintings specializing in golf and capturing the human emotion involved in the great sporting moments of our time. Medlock’s paintings involve what historians refer to as the "psychological moment," the inner world of a golfer setting up an important putt, the competitive nature of Bill Russell and Wilt Chamberlain, the emotionally charged scene of Yankee Stadium as Babe Ruth bids farewell to his fans. Medlock's keen sense of observation draws him to the subtle rather than the obvious.
Widely acclaimed for his unique ability to express an emotion by capturing a moment in time, Medlock’s paintings give the viewer much more than the pleasures of the visual world. His work stimulates all the senses. Though Medlock may portray figures in action, fundamentally he communicates the experience itself. And this is the genius of Medlock. He bridges the categories of illustration and fine art to create works of topical interest and enduring value.
Perhaps the most prolific, accomplished and recognizable American artist in golf, Medlock has intertwined many of the game’s grandest moments with its biggest stars and personalities – Arnold Palmer and Jack Nicklaus to Tiger Woods, Gary Player, Fred Couples, Greg Norman, Chi Chi Rodriguez and Natalie Gulbis. Medlock has been commissioned by the PGA TOUR to create artwork, such as during the 2006 Ryder Cup and THE PLAYERS Championship. Professional golf tournaments have also commissioned him to develop paintings for their exclusive purposes.
Medlock compiled his most memorable golf images from the last 20 years, as well as paintings from other sports, to his book, “Scott Medlock: Capturing the Moment” (2010, Enfantino Publishing). Nicklaus wrote the book’s foreword, with Palmer providing a page of recognition.
“Scott Medlock: Capturing the Moment” sports two different covers – one featuring Tiger Woods’ fist-pumping exultation following the playoff-forcing putt he made at Torrey Pines on the 72nd hole of regulation during the 2008 U.S. Open, and another depicting Jack Nicklaus and Arnold Palmer walking the 10th fairway of Riviera Country Club with the club’s majestic Spanish-style clubhouse in the background and Ben Hogan looking over them. That painting was originally created for the 1998 U.S. Senior Open Championship at Riviera Country Club and presented to Mrs. Valerie Hogan in a special presentation by Medlock, Palmer and Nicklaus.
Medlock’s work is legendary in the world of art, particularly through his fine art reproductions. Although recently he has concentrated on the world of golf, his past successes include abstract painting, children's book illustrations, magazine covers and paintings for major advertising campaigns. He was commissioned to be one of the official artists for the Olympic Games in Atlanta. Medlock has created and sold out numerous limited edition reproductions.
Medlock's prodigious talent surfaced early, graduating with distinction from the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California, at age 22. In a short period of time, he received awards of excellence for his art from the New York Society of Illustrators, Society of Illustrators of Los Angeles, European Illustrators Society, Children’s Book Illustrator of the Year and American Bookseller. He is a two-time winner
